The Thoughts from “Class Reunion”
Since we were children, we were inevitably “taught cultural lessons” by many kinds of media, news, tv shows, the speech of others, and the most instrumental: advertisement. The advertisement that I choose for this essay is called “Class Reunion”. It is a classic advertisement of the Porsche 911. In this advertisement, the producer not only sells a car, but also illustrates how the successful dreams of man connect with the Porsche. What is more, we can also get some implication from this classic advertisement of the view of gender, that is the theory that the males are controller of our world.
Let us take a look at the first part of this advertisement. The whole class gets together when they become adults. After a long time, the three childhood friends see a necklace which reminds them of their childhood. Then the advertisement goes on, we find out the necklace belongs to a beautiful girl who excites the three little boys’ interest. The three little boys rush forward when the girl drops the necklace. Why do we always see the male run after the female? This scene looks just like the males fighting in the animal world. We can further suppose that the little girl is their war trophy. This shows an implication in many men’s heart that they are the dominant gender of this world.
Why do so many men believe that they can control this world? Let us analysis it from historical perspective first. In ancient times, when humans have to fight with the wild animal for living, the men get respect by their strong physical strength. There is no doubt that men are dominant in the society at that time. We know many famous kings that control the world but we seldom hear which women control a whole country. However, this changes, when it come to modern times. The women get more respect from society and they play more important roles in the society. The evidence is that before 1900, there are no countries where all the women have the right to vote. In the early 20th century, there is women rights movement. Why? I think the most important reason is the development of science technology. With technology, physical strength is not as important as before. We use machines help us do the manual labor. Now we think more highly of intelligence than body strength. So the women change their social situation by using technology, now they become more powerful. However, even in the postmodern society, the equality between male and female is not realized completely. Even in the USA, a country where human rights are valued, there is lots of news that talk about gender discrimination. There is no female president in the history of USA. Let me illustrate a more interesting example. In my ISS class, I learned there is a most powerful club, whose name is Bohemian Club. Each year, they gather together to decide the future for America. The members of this club are the most powerful people
