Euthanasia has been an ongoing controversial topic for years. Society has debated for years whether or not to legalize the end of a person life with the help of a physician. No one wants to suffer. A person of sound mind and body should be able to make the choice of euthanasia. Many look it as suicide but it is a personal choice. It is not a decision that happens overnight. It takes some care consideration and extensive research, especially if a person has been ill for a while. The most difficult part about individuals in society is they don’t like to accept the reality of things. My brother often gets mad at my comments I make about certain things. He do not like to talk about death, or how it only takes one time to get AIDS when being sexually active, and so on. The point I am trying to make people can make the decision to play the lottery which puts them in debt ruining families and marriages. Therefore they should be in total control of their health. I am grateful for my health and strength but I do not want to be lying on a hospital bed three months brain dead. Euthanasia is defined as deliberate intervention or omission with the express intention of hastening or ending an individual's life, to relieve intractable pain or suffering (Sanders & Chaloner 41).
Legalizing euthanasia has its pros and cons. Three benefits of euthanasia are realizing individual autonomy, reducing needless pain and suffering, and providing psychological reassurance to dying patients (Sanders 355). Although is it is not justifiable keep in mind realizing individual autonomy should be considered because it is a strong part of the American people’s value. I do not like to see people in pain especially for long periods of time, especially after I watch my mother waste away for years just lying in a hospital bed.
