I. Purpose/Expected Outcome:
A. To provide guidelines for retrieval and return of medications from automated medication distribution devices (AMD).
B. AMD users shall encounter minimal distractions while performing any function at the AMD station.
II. Definitions:
A. AMD User: for the purpose of this policy is defined as individuals that have been granted authorization to access medication by use of the AMD Medstation. The individual level of access to specific functions and medication is assigned and authorized. See the policy Automated Storage and Distribution Systems - Security for a list of authorized AMD Users.
B. AMD Quiet Zone: designated are or procedure to ensure minimal distractions at the point of medication retrieval, preparation, and/or any other transaction process at an AMD.
III. Policy:
A. Performed by authorized AMD Medstation Users. Quiet Zone procedures should be performed by all staff.
B. Patient registration information is computer interfaced to the AMD Medstation. For various reasons there may be a delay in transmitting patient information and the AMD user will need to manually enter patient information to access medications.
C. The patient “INTUBATION, PATIENT” (or other appropriate generic language) may be used to access the AMD Medstation to remove medications in an emergent situation when no patient information is available. The AMD User accepts responsibility for crediting these transactions and charging to the correct patient if this “patient” is selected.
IV. Procedure/Interventions:
A. Medication Administration:
1. Remove medications per the Medstation procedures defined in the Medstation Reference Guide located on the AMD machine. (AMD USER)
2. Utilize AMD Profiling over-ride to access medication needed on an emergent basis for a patient. See the policy Automated Medication Distribution System – Medication Override and approved Medication Override List applicable to your facility.
3. Select the medication to be administered. The Medication Administration Record (MAR) or physician orders should be consulted prior to accessing medications. If the AMD Medstation is an AMD Profile Unit, medications cannot be removed until the medication orders have been reviewed by a Pharmacist.
4. Review the patient’s allergies, weight, diagnosis, and other medications for possible significant interactions.
5. Follow prompts and fill in the indicated fields if a clinical data screen appears. This must be completed before removing the medication.
