Part I: Complete the following table comparing international interventions and implications as it relates to the following:
Type of Abuse | International Interventions | Implications |
Child labor | There are several programs that aim to prevent or reduce exploitive child labor through education. The goal of these programs is to create a reduction of child labor by identifying, promoting, and supporting innovative, locally developed, and community-based projects. One such program is called CIRCLE and is funded by the United States Department of Labor/Bureau of International Labor Affairs/ Office of Child Labor, Forced Labor, and Human Trafficking (USDOL/ILAB/OCFT) Child Labor Education Initiative. | Child labor is considered necessary due to the increase of global trade both directly and indirectly. Ensuring laws are not only known to global trade partners but enforced is necessary |
Slavery | Many of the same interventions that are in place to reduce the instances of child labor, are also helping to reduce and eliminate slavery. The International Labour Office works primarily to stop slavery-like work conditions. Their website states, “Our vision is that no person, of any age, race, origin or religion, anywhere, spends a day of his or her life working under duress and suffering degrading or inhuman treatment.” | Many large business and global trade partners know children are being used to produce products. While it is uncertain if this is true, it is certain necessary for business that make the decision to do business in other countries that they are familiar with what work practices are taking place to include work hours, working conditions and who is making their products. |
Child prostitution | There are organizations both in the United States and abroad that work to end child prostitution. One such organization is Children of the Night. While they focus on child prostitution in the United States, they realize that by reducing it here, they are reducing it abroad and reducing the trafficking of children from other countries that are brought here for the sole purpose of being brought into prostitution | Child prostitution – especially in Thailand – is considered normal. There is even an industry devoted to tourism in Thailand that focusses on child prostitutes. Reducing (eliminating) this would mean finding new ways to stimulate economies that rely on child prostitution. |
