Acknowledgment

This project has taken efforts. However, the success that I have realised would have been impossible had I not received the type of support such as the one I received from different persons and institutions. Therefore, I most sincerely want to thank each of them. Failure to mention them by name does not mean underappreciation, but because the list could have almost been too long to complete.

I am greatly indebted to Anglia Ruskin University because of the continued guidance as well as supervision in addition to the provision of knowledge that was useful in establishing this report. I would also like to acknowledge my parents as well as my classmates for being of such help that always motivated, me throughout my studies and the time during which I was doing this work. My sincere gratitude also goes to my instructors, who have been my second parents throughout the entire coursework and the completion of my report.

Abstract

Background Information

The premier burden of HPV infection across the entire world is found in the Sub Saharan world, which comprises some countries including Nigeria. The study on surveillance of HPV, which is represented in this report, was completed in the North-Eastern part of the country (Ezem 2007, p. 94). The social, cultural as well as the demographic diversities of the nation could make the data that was found not to be a representative for the whole nation on a universal basis. The northern part of Nigeria, particularly the North Eastern part, has a higher rate of prevalence of infection of cervical cancer as well as some of the risk factors of the same infection. One of the reasons established for such a case is the fact that the region could be harbouring a higher HPV prevalence rate as well as possibilities of variant genotypic distribution. As such, this study was carried out with an aim of determining the connexion between cervical cancer and HPV.

Methods and materials

The objective of this work was explored on basis of data extraction from secondary sources. For instance, I utilised information found in an array of medical journals that were available through different databases such as google scholar and PubMed. In the conduction of my literature review on the causes of HPV I searched using ‘Causes and effects of Human papillomavirus’ as the search terms. I selected all the articles that fulfilled the criteria for inclusion in my studies. Additionally, articles’ reference lists were also explored for additional information. I also included information from publications of non-governmental organizations on screening programs for cervical cancer because they were found to contain useful data on the causes of HPV.
