The three social issues at the time of Gandhi's time are:
1. In the Hindu community there were too many differences between the upper & lower (untouchables) caste system, and the heated debate concerning the role of women within the India’s society.
2. Conflict regarding Hindu & Muslim this has be ongoing, particularly since the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
3. Gandhi very much wanted to inculcate a sense of self-respect, self-confidence and self-reliance to promote the power of decision-making among the people. He very much wanted that every individual would acquire the capacity to resist the abuse of power. Gandhi incited a freedom struggle; Gandhi took the path of Non-violence (satyagraha) instead that of violence.
Gandhi’s example of non-violent struggles were so powerful that the idea of satyagraha spread to other countries and was adopted in the early 1960’s by the Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. to help protest racial segregation in the United States. King insisted that activists march peacefully and sit in restaurants quietly and resists responding to threats or cruelty. Kings movement fought with gentle persistence and non-violence, which being magnified by publicity, brought success to his movement and several others throughout history. (Molloy, 2010) Martin Luther King Jr. was not the only individual at this time to use and distrubed the belief system and ideas of Gandhi. History well show us the long term effect on socity and how the ideas are going to effect the future of the United States.
