Introduction
During the course “Investigative Abilities” we received two days of lectures and workshops about the design tools. We needed to create one final idea that will improve the catering area on the NHTV. During the Imagination day and Engineering day my team and I experienced the design process. The effects of using the design tools are described in this reflection paper.

Brainstorming
“Brainstorming has traditionally been used to spur group creativity with the intention of generating concepts and ideas regarding a specific challenge” (Martin & Hanington, 2012, p. 22).
Brainstorming is gathering a list of ideas spontaneously with a group. The participants need to create a judgement-free zone to generate as many ideas as possible. During brainstorming quantity is more important than quality.
This tool was used to create as many ideas as possible. We chose quantity over quality to gather the most ideas. It was very effective to apply brainstorming for the group-assignment. During the brainstorming session I had so much inspiration and numerous ideas. We listened to each other and complemented each other’s ideas. After a short time we had a large list with ideas.
The effectiveness of the tool could be improved by narrowing the focus. You get better suggestions if you are more specific (Boogaard, 2016). During brainstorming we had a lot of ideas, but not all of them where good/useful. By being more specific you can create better ideas. If we had used different categories like food/soft drinks etc. We could have done a brainstorm-session per category. The ideas would have been more specific/useful.
