My Nursing Philosophy

As a student nurse, I believe the aspects of my nursing philosophy contain the core characteristics of nursing. The major core characteristics would be knowledge, accountability, and compassion. In order to fulfill a successful career in nursing, one must have the above characteristics and more. Nursing is the continuation of care to an individual that can no longer provide sufficient care to them or has limited ability to provide that care. In order to become not only just a nurse, but a professional nurse, one must contain applied knowledge, accountability, compassion, and much more.

In my opinion, knowledge is the most important characteristic a nurse can and must have to be successful in the health care system. Great nurses must prolong an increasing knowledge. With an ever increasing knowledge, it allows nurses to make room for changes and improvements in the health care and medical field. For example, new diseases are always being discovered. Also, current diseases are being looked into and extra information can be added onto them forming different views on that certain disease than what was once thought of before. Then that would cause changes in the type of medicine that was once used for it or the different ways on how to prevent that disease. So medicines and disease processes are constantly changing and nurses always need to be aware of that. There will not be any protocols you can memorize that will apply to every situation. Certain issues that nurses are faced with are ever changing and unpredictable. Nurses need to be a teacher and share some of their knowledge with the patients so they know how to prevent certain diseases and infections.

Becoming a great nurse not only requires knowledge about medicines and disease processes, but knowledge about the patient and making sure that nurse is meeting the needs of the patient. Just because a nurse can be successful with the application of what they learn about others health does not exactly make them a great nurse.
