The major role of nursing is to help individuals and groups attain, maintain and restore health. Thus nursing involves the interaction and relation with human beings, families and communities. Systems theory was first proposed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1901-1972) as General Systems theory which is a general science of wholeness. In this theory a system is a complex of elements in interaction, which on first appearance does not seem interconnected or related. The set of interrelated parts then come together to form the whole, thus all parts are vital to make a complete and meaningful whole.
In nursing, the system model views the person as a multidimensional being who reacts continually to a world of stressors.
Generally a system consists of four things, which are all important in nursing as well.
Objects. Which are the parts, elements, or variables within the system. These may be physical or abstract or both, depending on the nature of the system.
Attributes. These are the qualities or properties of the system and its objects.
Internal relationships among its objects.
Environment. Which is a place where the system exists. A system, then, is a set of things that affect one another within an environment and form a larger pattern that is different from any of the parts.
A system has components which include:
Input which is termed as the information or energy or matter that enters the system and is vital in achieving the desired purpose. In nursing a lot of data is collected when assessing patients, where it is important for the nurse to further know the client in relation to his /her environment.
Throughput. The gathered information or data is then transformed and reorganized. This will assist the nurse identifying the nursing diagnosis and outcomes. It further assists in planning and implementing the nursing care which is vital in having the individual whole agin as a system.
Output. After all these interventions, the the nurse should see that the clients health is improved.
Evaluating. The nurse is then able to see how well his /her intervention has helped the client and serves as a good feedback for revising the plan.
All the human being is the object of nursing and is composed of many elements, such as physiological, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural elements all important to nursing.
Humans enjoy the basic condition of life activities and health of a human being balanced between internal and external environment in the human body. This equilibrium and harmony greately depends on a normality of structures and functions of each element in the body and a harmony of interrelationship. It depends also on the adaptive adjustment.
