Nursing is the fifth most popular job in the United States. A nurse is a person formally educated and trained in the care of the sick or infirm. Every since I was younger I always wanted to help people recover from their medical problems. I would watch many TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, and want to do exactly what they were doing on the show. Now that I’m older I plan on going to UIC next fall for Registered Nurse. I’m already a Certified Nursing Assistant, so I’m getting a little taste of what nursing will be like. Even though I want to be a nurse, it’s more easily said than done.
To be a Registered Nurse you have to complete a various amount of school time, depending on the degree you are aiming for. There are three different types of ways you can go about for being a Registered Nurse. You can either get an associate degree in nursing (ADN), a bachelor's of science degree in nursing (BSN), or a diploma. An ADN program is offered by a community or junior college and takes three to two years to complete. A BSN is offered by universities and colleges and take four years to complete. A diploma is generated in hospitals and last three years. There is also an option to obtain a MSN, an accelerated master degree, which is offered after receiving a BSN. All nursing education programs include classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Students take courses in anatomy, nutrition, psychology and other behavioral sciences, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, and nursing. Of course one option is better than the others. Because a person with a BSN or MSN has more experience and training, there are more job opportunities for someone who has a BSN or MSN other than someone who has an ADN or diploma. So which ever degree you decide to choose, make sure you understand the advantage and disadvantage of them.
