Where to begin? In September of 2015, I was applying for life insurance as I was starting
to transition out of the Army. I was denied for the policy due to high glucose levels in my blood,
I made an appointment with my doctor and explained to her why I was there and what the
insurance company told me about my hemoglobin AC1. I started being interested in my health
and nutrition in October of 2015 when I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Prior to that time, I
had a lot of bad habits when it came to what I ate and my dietary habits. Due to my diagnosis, I
eat a lot healthier and pay more attention to the amount of sugars that I consume during the day.
Dietary Pattern
Almost daily I eat at least twice a day with an occasional snack. Rarely do I ever eat three
times a day unless it’s the weekend. I try to eat as healthy as I know how and I’m hoping to learn
more in this course of the types of foods I should be eating with my condition. When I have
snacks I usually have granola bars, yogurt, fruit, or sugar free pudding cups. My typical meal
consists of three to four course meals like steak, potatoes, green beans, and macaroni and cheese
for dinner. For breakfast, I usually have bacon, eggs, potatoes, and toast. We rarely go out to
restaurants as I have a big family (seven and one on the way) and it’s really expensive to eat out.
I do drink a lot of water and juices throughout the day as well. I love apples, pineapple, and love
eating salmon with rice! I do my best to throw in vegetables but I know I’m not getting enough
onto my plate. I’m also a bread eater, I love garlic bread and French bread and pizza. Most
likely where all my grains come from.
Physical Activity
My physical activity is decent at best right now. I lift weights at home with my son three
days out of the week for about 20 to 30 minutes and most of my cardio is from walking around
college and out shopping. According to the pedometer I walk around 7000-11000 steps per day
which I would consider light activity. Most of my time outside of classes is spent at home with
my family, I retired from the Army back in September of 2016 and I’m no longer as active as I
was while on active duty. I do plan on getting back into the gym and working out more
frequently once my courses are complete. I do plan on increasing my work outs from what I’m
doing now to at least 150 minutes per week and add more cardio as prescribed by the guidelines
for adults.
