Princess Diana once said "HIV does not make people dangerous to know,so you can shake their hands and give them a hug;heaven knows they need it. I believe that HIV infected healthcare workers should be allowed to practice. Nurses are entitled to the same protection against discrimination under state and federal laws as well as all other members of society.
When practicing everyone knows that there are certain safety precautions that should be taken. HIV positive health care workers should be allowed to continue practice under the condition that strict observation of recommended infection control procedures that apply to all healthcare professionals. The only way HIV can be transmitted is through blood or sexual activity. When drawing blood , healthcare workers should make sure there is no harm around them to cut themselves. Healthcare providers should not be required to disclose their HIV status to any patient.
Unless the healthcare provider believes that their is a significant risk or harm to the patient because of a clearly documented exposure to health care provider's blood or other hazardous body fluid should healthcare provider inform their HIV status. Healthcare providers are counseled to respond to any questions about their own health or HIV infection status.Health Care providers need not to be routinely screened for HIV infection; however if healthcare providers who have exposure to HIV should be encouraged to seek careful serologic follow-ups for these exposures.
Some people may argue that HIV positive healthcare providers should not be allowed to practice in medical facilities. But if you think about it , this is considered as discrimination. As long as the HIV positive healthcare provider is responsible in taking all the safety precautions possible , then i believe that there is nothing to worry about.
