4) Psychological Aspects of Having Diabetes
Living with a chronic illness can be very stressful. Many changes need to be made regarding lifestyle, constantly monitor blood levels, and stress management Indirect and direct stress of life include divorce, loss of a job, pain can drastically change one’s position of control with his or her chronic illness. “There is considerable research support for the direct association between chronic stress and poor glycemic control in diabetic adults” (Morris, Moore, & Morris, 2011). Angelo deals with these stressors on a daily basis. In the beginning of Angelo’s story he seemed to have his blood sugar, diet, and physical activities of the day in balance. His partner’s problems start to impede on his glycemic control plan. Due to the stressors of bring a new life into this world, Angelo is met with many more obstacles. Obstacles he may have not wanted. During the increasing stressors in Angelo’s life and lack of control in his care plan, Angelo needs motivation to alleviate his stressors. It is important to practice stress-reduction techniques to control blood sugar levels. Stress relieving techniques include breathing exercises, progressive therapy, exercise, cognitive therapy, and support groups (Morris, Moore, & Morris, 2011). Lacking control can make things worse for Angelo. His wife must also be a source of inspiration, and recognized his behavior. A chronic illness can at time remove autonomy for an individual. He or she may feel obligated to do one thing over another. Enhancing this relationship and involving nursing education can be food for thought and improve compliance/
