The benefits of understanding diversity in relation to health and social care
This report will analyse the benefits of understanding diversity in relation to health and social care. This will include the benefits that the staff and service users and their families experience if health and social care staff encourage patient centred and individual care. Some of the benefits of diversity consist of independence, empowerment , equality, respect, anti-discrimination, dignity and privacy.
Diversity is about respecting and valuing people’s differences and accommodating differences wherever possible so that individuals can play a fully part in the working environment. We live in a multicultural society with huge diiference is people from different backgrounds who have worked at different places in the world.

This image illustrates how diverse our society is. Therefore people working within health and social care and the service users will come from wide variety of backgrounds and will thus bring with them a wide range of beliefs and behaviours. It is important that every individual is valued and respected for who they are as diversity will benefit us all as you learn new things from them. In some cases this doesn’t occur as people are not educated enough about the different ethnicity groups and end up discriminating against them. This unlawful as everyone using the health service should be treated fairly and unwarranted discrimination. To prevent this occurring Britain has produced laws the help bring the different diverse groups together, so as a whole we can rejoice our multicultural society.
There are social and cultural benefits of diversity which affects everyones life as well as the health and social care sector. Social and cultural benefits include the arts, cultural enrichment, tolerance, education, food, language and social cohesion.
The Arts
According to the oxford dictionary art is the expression of human creative skills and imagination. It’s a visual form such as painting or sculpture and it is appreciated for their beauty and emotional power. Art presents an important value of bringing different diversity groups to a wider audience. This includes films which are made in other countries and shows and educate people about the culture of that country. It can also be illustrated in museums and exhibitions as it gives further insight of the different cultures and the history of the countries. All this can advance a profound and in-depth understanding of diversity. The benefits of this is that it breaks down barriers and enables social or community cohesion between the diverse backgrounds of people. This moreover creates a patient centred approach and individualized care.
