This paper examines the research methods and evaluation tools used to thoroughly analyze ten research pieces in order to recommend modifications that would benefit current nasogastric (NG) tube policies and protocols. Specific analysis of a study researching the use of frozen NG tubes during insertion in anesthetized patients and its subsequent successful insertion rate involved analysis of the five main areas of background information, literature review, methodology, data analysis, and conclusion as well as assessing for any ethical issues. Ten research pieces regarding NG tube policies and procedures were then evaluated individually using a primary research matrix and annotated bibliography. The studies were then compared and contrasted as a whole to examine the research studies’ efficacy in addition to the tools and their effect on the results. An evidence summary of the ten studies was also produced which helped conclude final recommendations that should be made to future NG tube policies and protocols. The benefits and importance of using a theoretical model is also discussed in order to add support and credible to one’s research.

Evidenced-Based Practice and Nursing Research
for Nasogastric Tube Policies and Protocols
The field of nursing primarily relies on using evidenced-based practice in order to make the best decisions when giving care to the patient. Nurses want to administer the safest care possible that will help the patient feel better and become healthier. The best possible nursing methods are found by performing research on a topic and finding the most updated information which provides evidence and proof that supports the findings. A professional registered nurse (RN) must be able to perform research on evidenced-based practices and evaluate the research in order to best apply them in the clinical setting when providing patient care. Several methods of evaluating an article include analysis of the five main areas of background information, literature review, methodology, data analysis, and conclusion. In addition, the article analysis should include review of ethical issues and utilization of a primary research matrix or annotated bibliography to evaluate research of therapeutic nursing interventions.
