Problems and Goals Case Study
Case- Alicia and Montford
Alicia and Montford, ages 6 and 7, moved about a year ago to New Horizon homeless shelter for families. They live at the homeless shelter with their mom and dad and only have until the end of the month to stay there. The children are not doing well in school and they are fighting with their peers and teachers. Both children are struggling academically and socially. Montford never brings his homework to school and when reports go home they are never returned. Alicia is unresponsive and sits in the classroom and stares or puts her head down. With state test about to begin soon, the teachers and principal are concerned about the children’s scores. Parents need to be called and a meeting must take place to voice these concerns.
There are several problems that should be addressed. Initial contact needs to be made in order to gather more information from the parents about the children. The first problem that should be addressed is the family’s housing situation; the family must be moved out of the homeless shelter by the end of the month. They must find a stable place to live. Another problem that must be addressed is the children’s behavior and they should also address their education.
Problem 1- Finding stable housing for the family.
The family is has until the end of the month before they must leave the homeless shelter. The goal is to help the family find housing by referring them to agencies that help families with housing.
Problem 2-The children’s behavior at school.
The children have demonstrated problems at school with their classmates. The problems include aggression and being withdrawn from their peers and teachers. The goal is to have the children assessed to determine if counseling is necessary for them. The school counselor can be used as a resource.
