Charity Begins at Home

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME …

To be completely honest, I've always personally believed that "charity begins at home" sounds a bit like selfish justification to me. I don't really care where charity begins; as long as it helps human beings in crisis. I think whoever a private individual wants to donate money to, that's up to them alone.

However as a country, as the united body we call the government; I believe that one's own country comes before any other responsibilities. The idea of the proverb can be found in the Bible. In 1383, John Wycliffe wrote: 'Charity should begin at himself.' Five hundred years later Dickens said that 'Charity begins at home, and justice begins next door.

“CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.“ So what exactly does it mean? Well, It's means exactly what is says – HELP THOSE WHO ARE IN NEED WHO ARE CLOSEST TO YOU - it's obvious, to me anyway. I agree with this statement, don't get me wrong I donate when I can to charity but to me it seems ridiculous for someone to donate money when they themselves need it. Charity should indeed begin at home, we should all sort out our own problems before we can hope to understand and/or help others. Obviously, this sounds selfish but it is a valid point when you see the irony of helping others while we fail to help our own. That said, we should all give help where it is needed.

Charity does begin at home and if it was practised then there might actually be the possibility of more charity being given to those who need it abroad. Don't believe me? Check out this water aid thing for African nations. So far since 1982 enough money has been collected by that charity for every individual on the continent of Africa to have 2 and one quarter wells each for water. Begs the question of where all that money went to if those people don't have those wells doesn't it?

They tell you to donate for African children when we got homelessness on our own streets, disabled/ ill people who don’t get the help they need and abused/impoverished children. Sorry to anyone who doesn’t agree but its true. It's not a selfish thought. How can you help others if you can't help yourself and your own family? So is it selfish? No. It's sensible.

Logic suggests that if you can't manage your own affairs, then you aren't really in a position to contribute to the affairs of others. My uncle, who is a doctor, said that one of the first lessons he learned in Emergency Medical care was that your first priority was to look out for yourself. You can't do anything for anyone else if you're not at your best first!

We need to take care of home before anywhere else - granted there is poverty everywhere - but just look around and you can find people in need in your own town. It makes bugs me to think we (the UK) can drop off food to a country we maybe at war with the next day, but take 5 days for help to reach people in the UK. I’m sorry are we not a country short in money? Yet we can give out money like we have that good to help. So I think this so called well off country called the UK isn't really that well off when we have kids going to bed every night with out food or real beds to sleep in and kids with out coats in the winter!
