Dolphin Slaughter- A phenomena happening mostly in Taiji Japan, and is responsible for the deaths of almost the majority of Japan’s dolphin population. The meat profited from the dolphin, is sold to it’s many markets, under the label Exotic Whale Meat. This meat contains high levels of mercury, which resulted in a boom of birth technicalities, and increased the population of disabled folk within Japan’s nation. There are organizations like Sea Shepherd and also more famous, driven to put an end to this terror is the Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). They made a film called The Cove which helped reveal the evils behind dolphin slaughter, as they expose The Cove a center of dolphin slaughter within Taiji. There is much more to this fascinating topic.
Longline Fishing- This is a practice in tropical countries (Which government and the law fail to acknowledge) in which fishers illegally drop many long lines with hooks into the waters in order to catch fish. It might seem okay, but it is responsible for killing other creatures in its path. Turtles, dolphins, manta rays, sharks, and much more, all fall victim to these dreaded hooks. Even though it is banned, it receives the least attention from the government even though it contributes to a larger, and more vast problem. Not only this, but this is responsible for decimating the population of fish in the last 50 years.
Shark Finning- Yes we all know sharks, the top predator of the sea fierce, and dreaded by all. But the images that are placed in our head by movies like Jaws are not realistic. Really they are gentle animals of the sea and have as much of a right to live. So Shark Finning, pretty self explanatory, is when sailors cut of the fins of a shark. Typically sharks have eight fins.
