In the view of the recent exposure of juvenile drug abuse cases, the government has launched a drug-testing pilot scheme in Tai Po district. Some schools in other areas have also indicated interest in starting the earlier proposed voluntary drug-testing schemes in September. However, many parents and students have expressed their worries and concerns on implementing it. How far do you think the drug-testing pilot scheme is an effective one? The surge in teenage drug abuse leads to mounting social concern about the drug raid. In a bid to combat with the traffickers, the government carried out the voluntary drug-testing scheme. The purposes and imperatives of this scheme are for prevention and for rendering assistance to students. Yet, many citizens cast doubt on the effectiveness of the voluntary drug-testing scheme on the grounds that it gives too much freedom to the students. Before judging whether the scheme is effective or not, we should look into it.

The main purpose of drug-testing scheme is arousing public's awareness of drug abuse. It is easier for teachers, social workers, parents and students to access the information of drug addiction, such as the sign of drug abuse, the harm drug abuse brings and so on. For instance, parents are more capable of realizing whether their children are drug addicts or not. The earlier we discover a drug addict, the easier for the drug addict to be out of the drug trap. This scheme also put a great emphasis on eliminating drug abuse by cooperating with parents and schools. It is perceived that a twofold help is more likely to bring the adolescents back from astray.
