When thinking of shows with “social class theses”, Duck Dynasty comes to my mind. This show is based upon a real life family that considers themselves a bunch of red-necks from Louisiana. The men in the family live for hunting, fishing, getting unrecognizably dirty whenever possible and making duck calls. Their beards are a couple feet long, camouflage anything is the attire along with big trucks with bigger wheels. The women pride themselves on keeping things pretty old fashion by handling the cooking and cleaning while the men are at work. One main difference in this family is they have turned a family owned business that makes duck calls into a muti-million dollar company in the last decade that now makes duck calls and more. This family stays true to the idea of red-neck or hillbilly in an unapologetic way.
One of my favorite episodes of this show opens with a hot, hot day in Louisiana. The gents who consist of about 5 men who should be working on duck calls complaining about the heat conditions. The air conditioner has broken; they are in a poorly ventilated room and just seem out right miserable. One of the gentlemen gets the idea to leave and do to the local snow cone stand to cool off. While there the gentlemen get the idea to create a “red-neck water park”. To do this they would hall tarps, huge tires and a crane to the edge of nearby pond. The tarp was used to create a slip and slips, the tire was hung on a tree to make a swing and the fun began. This is one of my favorite episodes because even though these are grown men creating this water park, they had their children enjoying the day with them. They are passing down the ethic of hard work, no I in team and you can do what you want, just try.
Another episode like is when the men had to go frogging all night to support the main lady of the show, Mrs. Kay. She is the wife to the company founder. Mrs. Kay has been named a genius in the kitchen and decided to adhere
