My gift to you.
May it lighten your path in the darkest of exam times.
Chapter 1
1. Schneider & Barsoux explain that convergence is a myth; the world is not ‘getting
smaller'. "In fact, rather than a cultural melt-down, we discover distinct cultural
fragments with clearly defined differences". Please provide TWO examples of these
distinct cultural fragments (don't use the ones mentioned in the book).
In the book the two examples are: Clearly distinct neighbourhoods, Each race
develops competitive subcultures in host country.
Two examples I give: In libraries distinct sections for different cultures, How for
example the bus is divided among different subcultures.
2. The second convergence myth says ‘management is management'? Please give
ONE example of your own that underlines this myth.
Although I do not agree with the myth as it is stated above people see the myth this
way because the goals where management teams work to are the same. (objective
based goals)
3. Please explain the metaphor ‘being in a culture is being like a fish in the water'.
You do not understand what it is like to swim until you end up on the shore. Only then
you realise what your normal environment is like.
4. Figure 1.3 in the book of Schneider & Barsoux shows Lewis Morgan's Pyramid of
Human Development. Please explain why some Chinese negotiators among
themselves refer to their western counterparts as harmless barbarians.
Because there is more hierarchy in civilisation in the Chinese culture they believe we
are barbarians because we do not honour their cultural few on hierarchy.
5. Please explain the Johari window and how it can be used in your own words. What
blind spots have you come across during your studies at IMEM? Please justify your
answer.
The Johari window can give you insight what you see/do not see and what they see
and do not see.
6. Please indicate ONE advantage
