Looking at Borders from Three Dimensions
By Professor Didier Bigot
During his lecture, Professor Bigot explored many themes regarding the secutiry measures at borders as well as the laws regulating migration. He analyzed the military aspect of borders by looking at the "electronic war" saying that it is a plan with tacticts to stop clandestine movements and activities however, he argues that these are fail politics since NGOs are also part of it since geo-politically interesting to control borders and individuals. Hence, NGOs came up with the idea of "war of civilization" to make it look important. Dr. Bigot claims that it more a logic of indiference rather than war since they are conflicts of ethics inside the navy of each country controlling borders.
On another the three dimensions of borders are according to Dr. Bigot : the fact that borders are "walls" meaning that they are solid aming at defending the country therefore they are made of integrated systems of external surveillance (eg : EUROSUR). The second aspect is that borders move it is a "liquid vision" and this has to do witht he flow of migration. Finally, there is another dimension that of the NSA, EU and USA.
Also, the feeling of insecurity leads to many practices that raise controversies and that are not unliaterally agrred upon. Insecurity leads to a "war of dualism" in which some groups are labelled as the other but also as the one inside. This dualism, leads to "border spectacles and Dr. Bigot gave an example of a border spectacle in Greece, because after the economic crisis Greese started to develop a zero-tolerance actions towards clandestine migrations and it also raised some feelings of racism. Another example of border spectacle, is between Italy and France under sarkozy and Berlusconi where each country wanted to gt rid of Tunisian migrants.
