What is conflict?
Conflicts occur can be viewed as 3-dimensional perspectives, cognitive(perception), emotional (feeling), and behavioral (action). These 3-dimensional perspectives can help to understand the complexities of conflicts.
Conflict as perception
Conflicts occur when a person’s own needs or desires incompatible with others. There are objective and subjective elements involve in this cognitive dimension. For example, what is the color of color of the Canada’s Flag, or how to go to the bookstore (many ways). When disagreement occur, conflict appears.
Conflict as Feeling
When conflict occur, there is always emotions involved. For example, they could be fear, anger, sadness, etc. And those emotions could affect both parties.
Conflict as Action
In the behavior perspective, we take actions to express our feelings toward the conflicts, because we want to achieve what we want. However, people have different preferences of styles to deal with such conflicts. For example, some people may become aggressive, violent, destructive or being silent, constructive, and friendly. It is beneficial to recognize our own, other people’s conflict solving styles, and act on reasons.
Why should we learn about conflicts?
When working in a group or a team, conflict always happen and it is unavoidable. It is because any team wants to maximize their output, and makes things perfect. Since nobody is perfect, every group members have different thoughts, and want to engage in the discussion in a team, so conflicts always happen when someone disagrees. If a team is well-prepared and productive, members are not afraid to share their thoughts and passively polish their work together.
A team without conflict may not be making the best decisions for team, because they might hesitate or avoid facing conflicts by not correcting or improving others’ ideas. Therefore, we should not avoid conflicts.
The Fear of Personal Conflict
Many people avoid conflicts, because they are afraid of hurting someone or themselves. And it most of the situations, it is difficult to satisfy both parties’ desires. However, a world without conflicts does not make any improvements, because everyone is avoiding facing the problem, and the outcome would be staying the same situation.
