EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The aim of this research is to determine the people awareness about halal issues in the food industry and how the rumors can affect people believes. The halal issue is often subjected to heated debate in Malaysia. Halal is defined as what is lawful or permissible according to Islamic law. People in Malaysia are really care about the halal issue in daily life especially food. It is because Malaysia is the Islamic country and majority of the people is Muslim. The halal issue of food industry is very important to the citizen. The rumors spread can affect the business of company. We have chosen Cadbury as our example in our research. It is because the most notable incident in the year regarding the halal status of a product is that of certain Cadbury chocolate sold in Malaysia. We want to study how the company handles this issue and their method to attract customer attention to their product again. This issue started when the viral of the analysis by the Health Ministry on chocolate samples by Syarikat Cadbury Confectionery (M) Sdn Bhd, it was revealed that there was porcine DNA in the samples of Cadbury Milk Chocolate and Cadbury Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut. JAKIM then start to investigate the issue and found that it not contain porcine DNA. Although the result has release, people still not confident with Cadbury. It has given huge impact to the sales of Cadbury chocolate. We have made the initiative to make the research on how they cope with this situation. We have used the qualitative and quantitative method. We distribute the questioners and interview the respondent about our research. It is to know their respond about halal issue in Cadbury. Our respondent is staffs and students in UiTM Segamat Johor.
Chapter 1: Introduction
- BACKGROUND OF STUDY
In 1974, Malaysia has involvement of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) to confirm the status of halal food product and goods. Beginning 1994, the halal confirmation was given the form of certificate with halal logo. On 1st September 2002, the government decided that all halal certification will be conduct by JAKIM which comprise only 28 positions. As Muslim, we have to protect our need and prevent from non-halal food. On 17th November 2005, the Public Service Department of Malaysia approved a total of 165 positions from different schemes, grades and designations to create the newly named Halal Hub Division. It is in order to meet the need of Muslim in Malaysia. However in April 2008, it has been taken to Halal Industry Development Corporations (HDC). Halal Industry Development Corporation has establish on 18th September 2006, focusing on development of halal standard, audit and certification, plus capacity building for halal product and services, HDC promotes participants and facilitates growth of Malaysia companies in the global Halal Market. The HDC has building up worldwide, for better quality products and services as consumers gain confidence in the halal process. In addition, HDC provide manufacturers, distributors, retailers, entrepreneurs, researchers and investors all the necessary assistance to penetrate the global halal market through the adoptions of the Malaysia experience and expertise in food and non-food sectors. Besides that, HDC support investment into Malaysia’s Halal industry, promote and market the Malaysian Halal brand and promote the concept of halal of related goods and services.
