Syrian Refugees Coming to America
As one of the most dramatic elections finally came to a close this month, we still carry some of the most heated arguments in politics with us. Syrian refugees have become a touchy subject in the United States. Donald Trump, our new president elect, made it very clear that he wants to stop the flow of Syrian refugees into the United States. As many people know, a Syrian War was started in 2011, which forced millions of Syrians to seek safety in neighboring countries, some are displaced inside of Syria, and the rest are still in need of humanitarian assistance. Some believe there is a large terrorist threat if the United States continue to resettle Syrian Refugees, but there are some people who think a two year process is as safe as it can get and they shouldn’t turn their backs on people in need. Even though the future president may not be on board, the statistics from the United States’ past refugee history shows there can be success in funding and resettling Syrian Refugees.
Richard, Anne C, and Toner, Mark. Briefing on Syria Humanitarian Assistance. U.S. Department of State , 27 Sept. 2016, m.state.gov/md262503.htm.
This congressional publication is a 2016 briefing by Mark Toner with Anne C. Richard, the Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration. Mark began briefing the reporters with the introduction of the interviewee and the subject at hand, which is an update on humanitarian aid in Syria. Then followed by the reporters asking Anne Richard questions on the matter. Assistant Secretary Richard touched base on the Leaders’ Summit on refugees hosted by President Barack Obama. She stated the goals of the United States pertaining the welcoming of the refugees, the money the United States is providing for lifesaving humanitarian assistance, and how the money provided will help the refugees and the countries hosting the refugees. Then the reporters ask Richard questions that show underlying concerns in the United States humanitarian aid. Richard uses her experience and the words of President Barack Obama to show how the United States has helped the refugee epidemic and how they are going to.
Capps, Randy, and Fix, Michael.Ten Facts about U.S. Refugee Resettlement. Washington, D.C., Migration Policy Institute, 2015, www.ltgov.wa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/refugee-facts-oct-2015-final.pdf.
Randy Capps and Michael Fix start this article out by stating statistics on the population of refugees and the number of refugees being admitted into the United States. They begin to go into the history of the United States accepting refugees to show how they have accepted refugees at much larger rates. The article takes a turn and goes into a Q and A set up, by using contradicting questions that most Americans have of letting refugees settle in the United States. Capps and Fix answer back with statistical data to prove how the United States is capable of having a successful resettlement program for refugees. They question the job success of refugees, how much government assistance they utilize, terrorism within refugees, and many other similar anti-refuge questions. Both authors are apart of the Migration Policy Institute, one being the president and the other being the director of research. They directly deal with the success of immigration in the United States: both the immigrants/refugees and the citizens of the United States.
