1.1 Definitions and additional information
- Federation (from Latin: foedus, gen.: foederis, "covenant"), also known as a federal state, is a political entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing states or regions under a central (federal) government.[1]
- Confederation (also known as confederacy or league) is a union of political units for common action in relation to other units.[2]
- The European Union (EU in the following text) is a politico-economic union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. The EU operates through a system of supernatural institutions and intergovernmental-negotiated decisions by the member states.[3]
