Impact Analysis
Everyone loves a great photograph. The people at Giroptic are about to release the first 360 degree HD camera through the help they have received from the Kickstarter crowdfunding site and the implications are huge. Promising to deliver by Christmas 2014, for a starting price tag of only $249 it is sure to find its way into the camera bag of many photography enthusiasts. The impact of putting a device with these capabilities into the hands of creative folks around the world could be very far reaching. The most difficult aspect to wrap one’s mind around is that taking pictures or videos with a 360 degree device no longer has to be intentional – you simply capture everything around the camera and then pick and choose how to edit later.
Soon we could view 360 degree video streams from anywhere in the world with audio. Combined with social media and this could be a very interesting innovation indeed. It could also play a key role in the evolution of corporate presentation and virtual meeting software. Can you imagine being able to scroll through 360 degree photographs of significant historical moments?
This is a great combination of form vs function at an affordable price and could change much of our traditional approach to photography and video recording. Imagine having the ability to go back to an event and see everything that went on around you. No longer relegated to the skill or luck associated with getting just the right picture. People will be able to record everything and then pick and choose later.
Giroptic differs from the other companies trying to break into the 360 degree cam market in some important ways: for one; they include real-time streaming which separates it from the Panono product. The 360cam is considerably less expensive (less than half the price) than the Bublcam product. And the Giroptic team is aiming to ship the 360cam beginning in November 2014, well ahead of their closest rival – the Centr Cam. From Giroptic’s CEO Richard Ollier “It is already loaded with GPS, WiFi, Gyroscope, 3 Microphones, but we see many opportunities in our backers comments and suggestions.” (Giroptic 360-Degree Camera Smashes Past Half a Million Raised on Kickstarter, 2014)
