Throughout history many people have made the long trek across the Atlantic to find a "New Hope" in the colonies of North America. Many of these people who decided to leave their country at the their own accord faced the same challenges as those who were taken from their country as slaves or for indentured servitude. The hardships most of these people faced were unsanitary conditions, rotten food, and overall poor living conditions. These people were from all walks of life: African, European, and Asian. Some made the journey built upon false pretenses and lies in order to sway them to come to the Americas. Hundreds of people were unable to survive the storms, disease, and the long months at sea.

William Penn wrote an account to introduce his new colony to the European world in an effort to lure investors and settlers to Pennsylvania. He is one of the many people who made the voyage across the Atlantic and prospered and wanted to inform the people of Europe of how prosperous, fertile, and the abundance of opportunity there was in the "New Land". Penn made his argument that if any of his countrymen wanted to stake a claim in another world might find the colonies of America as their best choice. Penn continued to stroke the canvas of his painting and describing the colonies as, "…I could write as to the Soil, Air, and Water: This shall satisfie me, that by the Blessing of God, and the honesty and Industry of Man, it may be a good and fruitful Land." William Penn was able to seduce his fellow countrymen into believing when they made the decision to transport themselves and their families the land would be prosperous and free. He continued to sell the abundance of timber, fish, wild game, along with all the commodities the country was capable of. By doing so, it ensured those people who were unsure of being able to survive; would be able to. Pennsylvania at the time was still under the control of England and made clear the English laws and constitution were still in enforced. He assured, "…the Rights and Freedoms of England shall be in force there." While still being under the control of the Crown, those who chose to leave England and continue their trade, or work, would be able to find employment on plantations. Penn classified the jobs in three categories: Industrious Husbandmen and Day Laborers who are unable to maintain their families. Carpenters, Masons, Smiths, Weavers, Taylors, Tanners, Shoemakers, and Shipwrights, who found working in England expensive, would find it cheaper in the colonies. And people looking for opportunities not provided in England. William Penn failed to inform those who decided to make the journey across the ocean of the treacherous weather and the hardships faced while aboard the ship.

Many German immigrants made the journey to America due to the promotion efforts by men like William Penn. Thousands of Germans migrated to North America during
