In the novel ‘Graffiti Moon’ by Cath Crowley, Lucy, Ed and Leo turn directions of their lives by the presence of art. When these art lovers see life in a different way their struggles turn into a revealing journey of ups and downs in life. Along with this Lucy chases after Shadow whilst Ed tries to escape his reality through art lastly Leo becomes more confident. This shows that art is transformative and leads to how Lucy has changed in the course of the novel.
Through the presence of art Lucy Dervish a young high school graduate girl, starts desiring a mysterious graffiti artist, Shadow. The artist who everyone talks about, as he paints the walls of Melbourne like no other. ‘Let me make It In time. Let me meet Shadow. Let me meet Poet, too, but mainly Shadow.’ Shadow has Lucy insane after his existence. Ed sets an Image of a perfect guy in Lucy's mind after she sees his art. “A guy who paints things like that Is a guy I could really fall for. Really fall for.” Lucy starts to feel a deep connection with Shadow through them both having an interest of art, As Lucy sees more and more of his artwork the deeper she starts falling In love with him. Shadow changes the way Lucy sees art making her understand a deeper meaning than the design or colours. “I like that about art, what you see Is sometimes more about who you are than whats on the wall.” She understands his words expressed through his art. Just to find Shadow Lucy goes to great depths as she assumes Shadow is the perfect person for her. Lucy’s date with Ed which did not end as expected but makes Lucy discover the fact her and Ed share an interest of art.
When high schools no more of an option life gets hard and the struggles become real for Ed. “Feels like art is the only thing I can ever figure out” Art impacts Ed by giving him a new Identity to paint breath taking walls of Melbourne and leaving a secret mark as Shadow, the artist who everyone knows about.
