The secret countess is a wonderful novel by Eva Ibbotson I highly recommend this book for its exciting story line and descriptive words it’s also very interesting because it’s based in the Russian revolution (1917) and in England in 1920.
Anna is a rich countess In Russia 1917 but is forced to leave Russia because of the Russian revolution and has to leave all her belongings and parents in Russia. Anna went to live in England. The book then skips two years when Anna works as a servant for Mr Westerholmes but falls in love with a young earl (a very rich man) but finds it hard to keep her true identity a secret. In England 1920, Will (the young earl) asked Anna to marry him and she said YES they plan a special day to get married. Anna feels she needs to tell Will about her past after they get married. Anna spills her deepest darkest secret to Will. Will is upset with Anna for keeping this secret from him and feels he can not trust her any more. So Will runs a way and joins the army. He is sent to fight in the war and gets caught in gun fight, is shot and dies. Anna blames herself for wills death and cannot forgive herself until a baby is left on her door step and she is to forced look after the baby.
I enjoyed this book because it was interesting to read about so long ago. It gives a very realistic view of how it was like to leave your parents and belongings and go to strange place so different to where you grew up.
The secret countess is a book filled with interesting facts with a great story line I would defiantly give this book 10 out of 10.
