Decision-Making Process Paper
I have recently dealt with an issue dealing with my son where the decision-making process could have been applied and eventually was. During the 2013-2014 school year, I was informed that my son was starting to struggle with the class work a little. I did whatever it was I was instructed to do by the teachers and did not think twice about it because I figured they knew what was best for him. He went on to pass on to the 2nd grade, but boy was I ever wrong for not investigating into what they were telling me more and just trusting them. When he started the 2014-2015, he was struggling even more. Once I realized something was not right, I initiated the process of trying to figure out what the problem was and how to help him. So I got together with his teachers, and we all came to the conclusion that he was struggling with reading in general. Once we all were on the same page that there was the problem we started doing different things to try and help him. We tried many things ranging from extended time on a test to extra time with the special education teacher working on reading. However, we were not successful in helping him, so we had to go a step higher.
We eventually enlisted the help of the school board pupil appraisal to test him to see if there was something more that we were missing. In the meantime, we kept doing different things to help him. When the results of the tests came back, it should that he had a learning disability in a specific subject reading and also found out what areas of reading the issue were. Basically what this determined was although he was in the second grade, he was reading at a kindergarten level and things he should have learned his was missing. With this new information, we were able to redo his IEP with the accommodation that we knew would making his more successful in reading. The process of getting his diagnosed took the whole school year for this process to happen so I do not know what the outcome of these accommodations will be but I am hopeful they will help and if not we will go back to the drawing board and try something else.
