Training is important in many departments of a business including human resources, sales, product management, management and more. Training often begins with the human resources department when an employee is newly hired. This training serves as a good foundation for beginning employment with the company. There are several factors for measuring the level of success in each training program including: efficiency, trainee mix, reactions, behavior change, performance change, and return on investment as a measure. These factors help determine the success of a training.
Of the training factors mentioned to measure the success of training, many of these factors are related to the individual receiving the training. Trainee mix is an excellent example where trainees are grouped together from different departments into a universal training. The trainees will have the chance to meet with other employees from different departments and regions providing a valuable outcome of training - cross-team collaboration. Increased efficiency is another factor of measurement related to an individual’s participation in training. Managers can use the training to help an individual excel and increase efficiency on the job, which could also increase job satisfaction. Reactions to the training are very measureable because training surveys and questionnaires can gauge how well the training was received by each participant (Fastrak Consulting, 1999). This will also help with preparation for future trainings.
Organizations can also measure successful training with organizational goals (behavior and performance changes) and a return on investment. Trainings successful in behavior and performance changes can be very valuable for the organization and measured with higher productivity and outputs. Organizations can also have a successful return on investment from training measured by the benefits (outputs) of the training greater than the cost of the training. The benefits achieved by a successful training will outweigh the cost of presenting the training.
