Company Motivational Profile

        In 1973, Federal Express established operations with "389 employees and 14 Dassault Falcon jets that delivered 186 packages to 25 U.S. cities." (FedEx, 2012).  "Today, FedEx provides customers and businesses worldwide with a broad portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services. With annual revenues of $36 billion, the company offers integrated business applications through operating companies competing collectively and managed collaboratively, under the respected FedEx brand.  FedEx remains "absolutely, positively" focused on all facets of safety, ethics, and professional standards including the "needs of their customers and communities" (FedEx, 2012).  FedEx presently has more than 280,000 employees and contractors, and is consistently listed among the globe's top employers.  

A Brief History of FedEx

According to "Our People" (1995-2012), FedEx was founded on a people-first philosophy, where respect for all people is a fundamental value and everyday business practice” (Diversity).  FedEx was founded by Frederick W. Smith.  Smith had his first ambitions of a delivery business during the time he was a student at Yale University.  Smith, according to "Frederick W. Smith Biography: Founder, Federal Express" wrote a paper on the need for reliable overnight delivery in a computerized information age” (para. 2).  After a stint in the military, Smith remained diligent to his dream and started his first express transport business in 1971.  Federal Express was started shortly thereafter in April, 1973 in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1994, Federal Express changed its name to FedEx.  As of 2011, FedEx remains one of Fortune 500 top-ranking corporations ("Fortune 500", 2012).  

Products and Services Offered

FedEx offers logistic services of parcels and packages through many varieties of transportation.  Logistics is defined as “management of business operations, such as the acquisition, storage, transportation and delivery of goods along the supply chain” (“Logistics," n. d. ) . FedEx offers both international and domestic services throughout the world.   There are air, ground, and freight delivery services of everything from hazardous materials to valuables.

In May 2010 FedEx had 290,000 employees.  Their revenue was $ 39.3 billion for fiscal year 2011, for fiscal year 2010 the operating income was $ 2 billion, the net income was $ 1.2 billion, total assests were $ 25 billion; and total equity was $ 14 billion ("Bloomberg Business Week", 2012).  Five year average: return on equity 8.4%; return on assets 4.7%; return on investment capital 7.5%; gross profit margin 51.1%; pre-tax profit margin 5.5%’ post-tax profit margin 3.2%; net profit margin (total operations) 3.2%; debt/equity ratio 0.13; total debt/equity ratio 0.16 (FedEx Corp (NYSE:FDX ) | Ratios and Returns).
