1. How do Kim and Jeff carry out the management function at NBB?
As managers, Kim and Jeff use the four functions of management in order to ensure the success of their company. They utilize their company’s resources in order to reach their primary goal, which is the successful sale of their high-quality craft beer. As managers, they understand their most valuable resource is their employees, and by creating a positive work environment they ensure that their employees will perform well. Their employee benefits motivate their employees to want to achieve the same goals for NBB. Their most important function as managers was through planning the company. Jeff is the one who set the company goal of brewing and selling authentic and quality Belgian beer. Kim planned the distribution and marketing. Their efforts created a loyal clientele that lead to the popularity of the brand. As the CEOs, despite having a very transparent financial model, they still control the desired performance of their employees thus ensuring a consistency with their product.
2. Describe ways in which the founders assumed decisional roles in their work.
The founders assumed decisional roles in their work by being the ones to develop the structure of their company, including but not limited to making decisions regarding the overall longevity of the company, decisions about which employee skills to focus on, and decisions regarding the training itself of employees. One of the most major decisions made within the company was made in 2012. Kim decided to sell her shares of the company to employees, making the company completely employee owned. Another decision made was to place an emphasis on employee benefits as a method of cementing their intended message. For example, the company provides bikes to their employees after working for the company for a year in order to emphasize their clean energy message. They also listened to employee and owner desires to invest in a wind turbine, which solidified the overall image of being socially conscious and eco-friendly.
