How to identify potential competitors.
It seems that Sky was a plausible competitor. They saw interest in SAT TV acquiring 69% of the company. So in a way they were broadcasting but with less power. So they had experience broadcasting in Europe and presence in the media industry in the UK (Newspapers). Thanks to its presence in the media industry probably there are some synergies between the NewCorp Company holding and Sky Channel that can be seen.
UK is one of the countries were TV was really popular, on average more than 3.5 hours day, and that is selling that it is a good market for advertising. In addition, NewsCorporation have the economic potential to overcome barriers and enter in this market.
The only option they have is to compete or exit

There are probably two different solutions for this problem:
Lobby in technology and also don't incur in extra costs, cause then your financial positions is going to be compromised. High Costs means less money to the stock holders and less leeway to operate.
