The iPhone was the first phone released by Apple, yet it created such a revolution in the mobile phone industry that it positioned the company at the forefront of the market. Since selling its first iPhone in June 2007, Apple has now accounted for over 30% of the smartphone market; and as the world swiftly adapts to mobile internet solutions, iPhone has almost wiped out the concept of traditional cellular phone. From its touchscreen, to the introduction of apps, to its ability to do video calls in its later models, iPhone continues to remain ahead of the competition.
The main lesson from this success is the central importance of focusing on strong products that are well- designed for the market; the key factors for this success include:
1. Simple designs that integrate technology breakthroughs to fill a newly emerging need.
Prior to the iPhone, the generic smartphone was bulky, difficult to navigate and mainly used by business executives and road warriors that needed to keep abreast mainly of e-mail and certain documents. Apple was first to market with a usable touchscreen that grabbed the user base that is not typically technical. The operating system was extremely novel, with the ability to zoom in and out by pinching your fingers and scrolling with the flick of a finger, which transformed the experience of using a smartphone. The fact that the iPhone did not have an onboard keyboard or a stylus type pen enabled it to have a design that was sleek and elegant.
