Dr. Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis on April 4th, 1928 and was raised in Stamps, Arkansas. Dr. Angelou suffered the cruelty of racism, but she grasped faith and values of the usual African-American family and principles. As a young woman, Dr. Angelou passion for arts got her a scholarship to learn drama and dance at a San Francisco Labor School. When she was 14, she ended up dropping out of school to work in San Francisco as the first African-American female cable car driver. Dr. Angelou later finishes high school, and gave birth to his son a few weeks before graduation.
Dr. Angelou was given with pass down clothes from white women and she was joked around. Her childhood was overflowing with sadness and at age 8 she was sexually assaulted by her stepdad. After this horrible event, she went into a 4 years of depression and silence. During this time she started reading and getting an interest in poetry and this might be the start of her greatest profession.
Dr. Maya Angelou is one of the most distinguished and powerful voices of our time. Acknowledged as a global regenerating woman, Dr. Angelou is a novelist, filmmaker, educator, poet, producer, and civil rights activist. Dr. Angelou was somebody that was a great student of leadership and the creative process, and that understood what it takes to have the valor to lead.
Dr. Angelou has assisted on two presidential organizations, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and has been awarded 3 Grammy Awards. She wrote a poem for President Bill Clinton to read at his presidential
