Introduction
Leadership refers to the process of influencing others where influence is the ability to affect the conduct of others in a particular direction. While considering the other term, power is the capability of influencing others. Any person who influences others must first gain the capacity to influence which is power. Leaders are persons who are involved in controlling the frontiers of the individual groups from outside and inside the organization (Lussier, & Achua, 2010).
Leadership is all about facilitating proper working in the organization for the subordinates and coaching them to ensure efficient performance. The leaders are involved in managing cases related to discipline in the organization and training the employees while at the same time communicating what has to be done to ensure that everybody is working towards the common set target. This paper will discuss leadership by referring to my personal experience in an organization where I was assigned. The senior enlisted member/First Sergeant of the company was in control of running and operating the entire company of about 120 Soldier. Soldiers within this company were expected to conform to this individual’s guidelines and rules. From this individual the Soldiers expected this Leader to help develop them into well-rounded knowledgeable Soldiers. However, that is not at all, what seem to happen because this individual seemed to lack some of the essential skills need to be an effective leader. The following will discuss how effective leaders should have contingency factors, different strategies for controlling subordinates, leader- member exchange and understanding, have knowledge of the different styles of making decisions, have power and be able to give authority and be able to solve conflicts and problems in the organization (Kouzes, & Posner, 2008).
