NFL Leadership Profile Paper
The key to being a great NFL leader and athlete is being passionate about the job. I believe that great NFL leaders and NFL athletes rely on hard work and practice. The overall great leadership of the NFL will create great success for the league and the fans. In this paper, we will discuss the desired leadership traits, skills, styles, and behaviors. Also, we will discuss the NFL standards of methods of developing leaders, balancing values and priorities, and the NFL values their leaders and managers. In the NFL, the players and leadership are very passionate on winning and creating a culture of passion. An NFL leader ensures the fans and media understands that players and managers believes in a strong desire to win. The NFL leadership are expected to communicate on and stand up for issues that value the organization. In order to do this, an NFL leader needs to locate their voice. In other words, the NFL leader needs to discover what they are passionate about. In order to be able to express authentic appreciation towards their fans and organization, the leaders need to be in tune with what drives the fans and public. Listening to the fans, leadership, and managers and asking clarifying questions, and expressing expectations can accomplish this. Newhouse (2016) stated, that Team leadership is complex; there are no simple recipes for team success. Team leaders must learn to be open and objective in understanding and diagnosing team problems and skillful in selecting the most appropriate actions (or inactions) to help achieve the team’s goals. It is important to note that these critical functions need not be carried out only by the leader. Experienced members in a mature team might share these leadership behaviors. As long as the team’s critical needs have been met, the leadership behavior, whether enacted by the leader or team members, has been effective. The key assertion of the functional perspective is that the leader is to do whatever is necessary to take care of unmet needs of the group. If the group members are taking care of most of the needs, then the leader has to do very little.
Both the model the way practice and cultivate behavior address a very fundamental human need which is the need to have a relationship with someone who is credible. Credibility is a key function and attribute of a great NFL coach. As a NFL coach, credibility comes from being consistent in how you play and manage the game and building teams of likeminded individuals. Meeting staff members and players is vital in handing out praise and critiquing performance both on and off the field. Also, it is very vital that the NFL coach and his staff work extremely hard at ensuring that new players fit well into a NFL team system. This is accomplished through team meetings, player and coach reviews. During team meetings, players and coaches discuss upcoming game strategy. In player and coach reviews, both team players and coaches critique game and practice footage. When not at work, it is very important that veteran players continue practicing this behavior by actively socializing with new members of the team.
