With skyrocketing economic growth in the past decades, China has overtaken the US as the world’s largest economy. The influence of china is more powerful at a national level. The common language used in China, Mandarin, is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Much as many young people do not want to witness, the dominating world of Mandarin probably will happen in the foreseeable future.
Youngsters, especially business students, stand much chance of going to work in Mainland. Therefore, mastering of Mandarin is of paramount importance to our career. Yet, Hong Kong's young people are reluctant to learn Mandarin. To commence with, each character requires memorization and you have to learn tens and thousands of them in order to be liberate. Overwhelming combinations of vowels, consonants and tones are huge barriers for beginners. That is why numerous teenagers who can speak Putonghua never bother learning to read Chinese.
Apart from the language natural features, Hong Kong education system do not advocate learning Mandarin. Most students see HKDSE a life and death situation so they work around the clock on memorizing answers. As a result, they rarely spend time on improving their Mandarin, some even do not have chance to speak Mandarin in their secondary school life. Accordingly, this are the reasons why teenagers overlook Mandarin.
Speaking Mandarin fluently will definitely work in our favour. Plenty of job requirements these days involve working in China or dealing Chinese counterparts over the phone. As a business student, it is my firm believe that students should avail themselves of the opportunities and stride the latest trend in the business world.
