Article 1:

This paper explores the ways in which foster children and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) intersect as social and medical categories. This makes it possible to see how the power dynamics of the medical, educational and welfare systems lock the diagnosis with its embedded meanings into the child’s life. It is also possible to see how counter forces like a caring foster family can challenge medical and welfare authorities.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder of childhood; 4.1 million (7.2%) US school-aged children have a current diagnosis. Medication is the single most effective treatment, and monitoring ADHD treatment patterns is important for improving treatment in this population. We recently published estimates of parent-reported ADHD diagnosis, by state and relevant demographics. The objective of this study was to estimate 2007 rates of medication treatment of ADHD, by state and sex-stratified age.

Of the 34 foster children, 18 are boys, 6 of whom have been diagnosed as ADHD. This rate of ADHD is much higher than the 3–5% prevalence that has been found in most national surveys of school-age children (American Psychiatric Association, 1994,1997), and in keeping with higher rates of diagnosis among foster children.
