Introduction
Target is a retail business that was founded back in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. Back then Target was called Dayton Dry Goods Company. (Target through the years, 2016) Under George D. Dayton’s leadership, the Dayton Dry Goods Company began to experience rapid growth where it then became The Dayton Company in 1911. (Target through the years, 2016) In 1918, George D. Dayton founded The Dayton Foundation, in order to promote welfare for all of mankind. (Target through the years, 2016) This foundation would be a starting point for Target’s strong desire to be socially responsible and would begin “a history of giving.” (Target through the years, 2016) Target expresses this view through their vision and mission statement. “We fulfill the needs and fuel the potential of our guests. That means making Target your preferred shopping destination in all channels by delivering outstanding value, continuous innovation and exceptional experiences—consistently fulfilling our ‘Expect More. Pay Less.’ brand promise.” (Target through the years, 2016) Target continues by stating that they believe in celebrating diversity and inclusion, providing community support and engagement, and by being a fun and rewarding place to work.
Target is a national retail business having stores located all across the United States. In 2001 they had launched 1000 stores across 47 states, and by 2009 they had opened stores in Alaska and Hawaii. (Target through the years, 2016) In 2011 Target wanted to expand in Canada and in March, 2013 they succeeded. (Target through the years, 2016) By the end of 2013 Target had opened 124 stores across Canada. However, by April 12, 2015 Target discontinued its operations in Canada.
