WHAT IS LEADERSHIP
Warren Bennis & Burt Nanus in their book, Leaders: Strategies for Taking charges – they discover over 850 different definitions of Leadership… No wonder many leaders are unsure how they measure up/
George Barna, Leaders on Leadership, “ A Christian Leader is someone who is called by God to lead; leads with and through Christlike character; and demonstrate the functional competencies that permit effective leadership to take place”
Robert Clinton, The Making of a Leader “The central task of Leadership is influencing God’s people toward God’s purpose”
Peter Drucker point out “ Popularity is not leadership. Results are”. People may hold a position of leadership, one wonders if a person has truly led until some one has followed, and more importantly, until God’s purpose are advanced.
Robert Clinton observe hat God’s purpose are the key to spiritual leadership – the dreams and visions of leaders are not.
First - , spiritual leaders can lead those who are not God’s people as well as those who are. Christian leadership is not restricted to within church walls but is equally effective in the marketplace.
Second – Leaders lead their people toward God’s purpose.
Just as Moses was not released from his followers when they disobeyed God and began a forty-year hiatus in the wilderness, so true leaders stay with their people until they have successfully achieved God’s purposes.
Moses himself had remained faithful to God, yet God would not release him from his rebellious people. To abandon followers because they refuse to follow is to forsake the sacred calling of a leader.
Spiritual leaders know they must give an account of their leadership to God; therefore, they are not satisfied merely moving toward the destination God has for them; they want to see God actually achieve his purposes through them for their generation (2 Cor. 5:10-11).
A true spiritual leadership can be defined in one concise statement : SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP IS MOVING PEOPLE ON TO GOD’S AGENDA.
THE SPIRITUAL LEADER’S TASK
- The Spiritual Leader’s task is to move people from where they are to where God wants them to be. – this is influence - Once spiritual leaders understand God’s will, they make every effort to move their followers from following their own agenda to pursuing God’s purpose (remember Purpose Driven Life”) . How do you as a spiritual leader know you have done your job well is when the people around you have encountered God and obeyed His will.
- Spiritual Leaders depend on the Holy Spirit. Spiritual Leaders work within a paradox for God calls them to do something that, in fact only God can do. Ultimately , spiritual leaders cannot produce spiritual change in people; only the Holy Spirits can accomplish this. The H.Spirits often uses people to bring about spiritual growth in others.
