The Pitch
After Yossarian escapes from Pianosa, near the Italian coast where he was a soldier for WWII, he is flying a plane to Sweden in hopes of meeting his friend Orr, who escaped the war. He attempts to gain freedom and not risk his life constantly for the sake of his greedy and cold commander. Along the journey, Nately’s heartbroken girlfriend strangles Yossarian, and he crashes the plane in Sweden as he fights her off. Yossarian struggles to get out of the rubble, and stumbles upon a nearby city. He soon realizes that he is a wanted man by Colonel Cathcart’s men, his old comrades who are stationed in Sweden, and by the Germans and Swedish soldiers who can recognize that he is an outsider based on his ragged American uniform. While cautiously wandering the city and avoiding all soldiers, Yossarian runs into Orr, and together, they try their best to navigate the city and stay alive while being hunted by enemies on all sides.
This sequel continues from Catch 22’s ironic plot. In the sequel, Yossarian escapes from the war he is fighting on, just to land in a country that supports his enemies in the war, and has to once again fear for his life on a daily basis. Nately’s girlfriend, instead of grieving and attempting to move on, is angered and wants revenge on Yossarian, even though he only delivered the news and didn’t cause Nately’s death. Overall, both novels appeal to the audience’s sense of pathos. The audience might also sympathize with Yossarian; many people have gone through a time in their lives when they couldn’t escape from an event, no matter how hard they tried to. They might also sympathize with Nately’s girlfriend since many people have lost someone or something so precious to themselves, and it is hard to let go, especially in the early stages. Therefore, these novels help the audience actively engage with the characters since their struggles are relatable.
