Another Day, Another Dollar
The sound of laughter fills the air of the building. I sit and watch from the corner of the break room as the colleagues engage in friendly acts. From the pleasant looks and constant conversations you can tell its payday. Cages of mail cover the showroom floor as the workers take on the tasks of the night. Mechanics are dressed in navy blue fitted jumpsuits. They pace the floor readily available for machine maintenance checks. I can hear the belts rotate on each work station as the mail is fed through the machine for sorting. Each stacker of the machine fills up with mail designated for a specific zone. Clerks move ghastly up and down the machine to empty the mail into trays. Huge black forklifts filled with pallets of letters travel around the building transporting the packages to the appropriate destinations. White mailing labels cover the floor in the area of dispatch where the mail will exit the building. Workers move rapidly to prepare the mail for takeoff. Waiting at the docking station is a driver dressed in a navy blue, starched postal uniform who gladly salutes the clerks that await him. He smiles then departs the facility. The workers gather around the time clock to clock out and leave for home, happy yet another day of work under their belt.
Rambunctious voices circle the mail room floor. I gaze out from corner of the break room to watch as workers move rapidly to finish the night out. From their eagerness to finish vastly you can tell its payday. The dirty steel cages overload the work room floor with people. Tightly fitted work attire cover the body of the mechanics who have to constantly be open to handle the maintenance issues. The loud machines crank with each belt rotation as the mail is being forced through the device for proper sortation. The machines rings loudly as each stacker quickly fills up with heavy mail. Running, the workers move back and forth to empty the mail into assigned trays. Dust from the dirty forklift carrying huge bundles of letters drive the floors of the mailroom to deliver mail to the routing destination. The exit is covered in trashy labels that have been littered. Workers move wildly while the mail is leaving the work floor. The driver waits at the dock with an attitude to deliver the mail. He leaves the workers with an unsatisfying look. People crowd the time clock to leave for home after a long hard day of work. Another day, another dollar.
