Romeo and Juliet Essay
Friar Lawrence and the Nurse are always to kind to Romeo and Juliet. They try to help Romeo and Juliet whenever they can. It is debateable if the Nurse and Friar Lawrence knew they were the reason Juliet and Romeo died, how they did the wrong thing in their relationship with Romeo and Juliet. The Friar and the Nurse
The dynamic of Friar Lawrence’s relationship with Romeo was clear in the quote, “A gentler judgement vanish’d from his lips: Not body’s death, but body’s banishment. Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say ‘death’ For exile hath more terror in his look, Much more than death. Do not say ‘banishment’!” (3.3.10-14). Romeo and Friar Lawrence had a good relationship. When Romeo enters the church and says “Father” he refers to Friar Lawrence because he is a priest. Romeo also asks Friar Lawrence what is in store for him since he has killed Tybalt, he is scared of what they will do to him. Friar Lawrence’s relationship with Juliet is complicated. She came to him wanting help, since Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet came to him she was to marry Paris, but Friar Lawrence had a plan. He gave Juliet a potion that would make it look like she has died, but really she is just sleeping for 42 hours. This is so that she would miss the wedding and not have to marry Paris. Then Friar Lawrence would send a letter to Romeo explaining that Juliet is not actually dead, and to go be with her when she woke up. Then Romeo and Juliet could run off together and their families would not know. Friar Lawrence is good friends with both Romeo and Juliet, he helps them out in their times of trouble. Secretly, Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet. He hoped marrying them would help end the feud between the two families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Instead of ending the feud, it only added to the feud of their families. This is evident in the quote from Act 2 Scene 3, “thy love did read by rote, that could not spell. But come, young waverer, come go with me, in one respect i’ll thy assiantat be: for this alliance may so happy prove to turn your household’s rancour to pure love” ( 2.3.88-95). After the Friar married Romeo and Juliet, he warned them that they were moving too fast in their relationship and that it would not end well. Friar Lawrence’s character is crucial to the story line. If he did not have a connection with them, Juliet would have married Paris, and Romeo would never have came back to free Juliet from the tomb. If they were not close with him, they would both be alive.
