Discuss the relationship between Lennie and George. What did it symbolize? The relationship between Lennie and George is that they are two close friends who travel together. George gives Lennie protection and guidance, and Lennie believes in George. Their friendship symbolizes the idealized male friendship because Lennie and George always have one another's best interests in mind, alway have each other's backs, and share an unconditional friendship where it doesn't matter what happens between them because they will still be friends in the end.
Discuss the way characters communicate in the story. The characters in Of Mice and Men communicate in the story in an unfriendly manner, often hurling derogatory insults at each other.
Discuss the role of foreshadowing in the work. Foreshadowing in Of Mice and Men played a tremendous role in the development of the story. One example of foreshadowing that gave us clues of what to expect later on in the story is when the author told us about Lennie's incident in Weed when he grabbed the girl's dress and she thought he was going to rape her. This incident foreshadowed the situation in which Curley's wife offers to let Lennie feel her hair but he ends up accidentally breaking her neck when he tries to stop her from screaming. Additionally, the situation when Lennie kills a mouse, but keeps petting it even after its dead foreshadows the same thing happening to the puppy and Curley's wife. Lastly, the incident in which Carlson agrees to kill Candy's dog by shooting him in the back of the head, foreshadows that George will kill Lennie the same way after he kills Curly's wife.
