Power can change people in a way that is incomprehensible. It can make someone so greedy that they would do anything for it and would not let anyone, or anything stand in their way. The story of Macbeth portrays this well, and therefore will be used throughout this essay. Various quotes and examples will be used showing how the hunger for power can impact people. Macbeth’s lust for power causes him to make sinister decisions that lead him into insanity and misery.
Power can make people so hungry that they would find it difficult to make sensible decisions. Macbeth shows how power can harm ones sense of security. Macbeth, who is the central character, lets his greed for power consume him. This makes him do things that he would not normally do. He is told to “have a false face and that he must hide what the false heart does know.” This is seen as the first incident where Macbeth is changed as a character. The power that he receives after being king makes him nervous and unable to live life fully as a king should.
After killing Duncan, Macbeth appears to undergo an immense transformation. His conscience, which afflicted him earlier, vanishes without a trace. His belief in the prophecies allows his confidence to grow. Upon taking hold of the throne, Macbeth uses his power to exert control over others. However, the ways he exerts control change with the position. For example, Macbeth uses words as well as his title to convince the murderers that it is in their best interests to kill Banquo. As the play progresses, he seeks to exert more control, and he is seen in the eyes of the people who once admired him, as a tyrant.
When given power, people become greedy and they need a bigger sense of security to ensure that their power is not in jeopardy. Macbeth is given the opportunity to acquire more power.
