Integrity and Courage
A brave person is not afraid of dangerous situations. “The Crucible” is a play that took place in Salem in 1692 where there were witch craft trials. The author Arthur Miller writes about a man that has been through a lot to prove the point that he died for what he did not do. In “The Crucible” the theme Integrity and Courage is displayed through the character of John Proctor.
John Proctor’s pride about his name causes a conflict between him and the court. They accused him of been a witch and they wanted to put the letter that he signed on the church. They were going to put his name on the church for proof that he signed the paper. He didn’t want that to happen and he told them “Because it’s my name”. He said it to Dan Forth. Proctor didn’t want to loose his name that was the only thing he had left. He said it even though he was faced with death. Finally John’s self-esteem caused refusal to sign the confession although it will result in his death.
John’s proud demeanor about himself results in an argument with Parris. Parris didn’t understand that John wanted to keep his name from being spread around the village. Parris wanted the village to have proof that John singed the paper, but John was like (Damn the village I confessed to God and God has seen my name on this it is enough). Parris didn’t take that and still wanted Johns name posted on the church doors. But John didn’t care what other people thought, but he wanted to prove that he stands on what he believes in. As a result, John’s proudness about himself resulted in a disagreement with Parris which led to his death.
