Scenario

As a level three student of health and social care it is important that you have an understanding of the psychological principles and theories in practice as they impact on individual’s health and behaviour. The psychological are used in practice in all fields of psychology.  You will need to produce a fully cited and referenced academic report on the principles of psychology applied to health.

Task 1

Task 1: First section of the report.

1. Compile the beginning of a report explaining and assessing the principle psychological approaches to behaviour.

1. You will need to include information on the following:

• Biological Perspective – e.g.   Gessell - ( Maturational theory, Genetic influences)

• Cognitive / Information Processing Perspective – e.g.  Piaget, Kelly (Cognitive development, personal construct theory)  

• Psychodynamic Perspective- e.g.  Freud, Erikson – (developmental theories)

• Behaviourist Perspective - e.g.  Pavlov, Skinner and Bandura – (conditioning, reinforcement and social learning theory)

• Humanist Perspective - e.g.  Maslow, Rogers – (hierarchy of needs, self-concept)

Give detailed explanations of the principle perspectives and the theorists associated with them.

You will then need to explain the different psychological approaches in relation to the fields of health and social care.

• Biological Perspective- Predisposition to certain behaviours, genetic faults that may have influence

• Cognitive / Information processing Perspective - Early experiences in childhood

• Psychodynamic Perspective- Psychoanalytical theory-Childhood development and influences

• Behaviourist Perspective - Consider family members, domestic abuse, theories behind the development of personality as learned behaviours, may include learnt behaviour, self-fulfilling prophecy, influence of culture

• Humanist Perspective - How did their choices in life influence their lifestyle choices? Were there discrepancies in their needs being met which lead them to make divulging choices? Consider the theories on self-esteem development. Consider the reasons behind their capture.

Then go on to compare and evaluate two psychological approaches to the fields of health and social care provision

• Compare two of the psychological approaches you have discussed and identify which one would best cater for the field’s health and social care.  

• Evaluate the two chosen psychological approaches to health and social care provision. You need to evaluate your chosen approaches in detail
